Advantages and Disadvantages of Autotransformer

Autotransformer refers to a transformer whose primary and secondary windings are on the same winding, and the primary and secondary windings are directly connected in series and self-coupled. According to the structure, it can be subdivided into adjustable pressure type and fixed type. Auto-coupling means electromagnetic coupling. Ordinary transformers transfer energy through the electromagnetic coupling of the primary and secondary coils. There is no direct electrical connection between the primary and secondary sides. The primary and secondary sides of the autotransformer have direct electrical connections. Its low-voltage coils It is part of the high voltage coil. Protective equipment such as autotransformers are also used in protective equipment for communication lines.

Ⅰ. The advantages of autotransformer:

1. Less materials and low cost: Because the primary and secondary autotransformers share a set of coils, the material cost is naturally greatly reduced compared with isolation transformers of the same capacity.

2. Easy to install and transport: because it is smaller and lighter than the isolation transformer of the same capacity.

3. Improved the ultimate manufacturing capacity of transformers: The ultimate manufacturing capacity of transformers will also be restricted by transportation conditions. Under the same transportation conditions, the capacity of autotransformers can be larger than those manufactured by dual-winding transformers.

Ⅱ. Disadvantages of autotransformer: Can not achieve the effect of safety isolation.

Because there is not only a magnetic connection between the primary and the secondary stage of an autotransformer, but also an electrical connection, it cannot play a safe isolation role like an isolation transformer. Therefore, when using an autotransformer, you need to be careful not to accidentally touch it.
